Mimijane Foundation for Women and Children with Disabilities is proud to unveil a proposal aimed at amending Parts I to VIII of the Disability Act (2018) to integrate gender-specific components. This initiative addresses the unique challenges faced by women and girls with disabilities in Nigeria, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding their rights.

The proposed amendment includes provisions for accessibility, education, healthcare, and access to justice. It advocates for mandatory reasonable accommodation in public buildings, inclusive education, comprehensive healthcare services, and specialized support within the justice system for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence.

The Foundation highlights the need for transparent and inclusive processes, ensuring stakeholder participation from women and girls with disabilities, civil society organizations, and the international community. This approach aims to reflect the needs and aspirations of the marginalized demographic.

Presented by Executive Director Beatrice Mube at a public hearing organized by JONAPWD and the House Committee on Disability, the proposal represents a significant step towards advancing the rights and dignity of women and girls with disabilities in Nigeria. Through collective efforts, we can foster a more inclusive and supportive legal framework.
